Your Emergency Dentist in Fontana, CA

You can be incredibly diligent in taking care of your teeth and still suffer from an emergency that needs immediate treatment. While dental emergencies don't happen all the time, most people will likely have at least one in their lifetime. You might notice small throbs of pain and discomfort that only seem to get stronger as the days pass.

Pain is your body's way of telling you that something is wrong. Dental pain, in particular, should be attended to promptly because it typically won't go away on its own.

At WinningSmiles Custom Dentistry & Implant Center in Fontana, CA, we keep space in our schedule so we can see patients with dental emergencies quickly – usually the same day you call.

When you're going through an emergency, it's not the best time to start shopping around for a dentist. Additionally, you probably want the reassurance of a familiar face that you can trust during your time of need. At WinningSmiles, our kind and friendly dental staff will accommodate your needs and relieve your pain.

If your emergency happens during the time our office is regularly open, we will make arrangements to see you that very same day—especially if you're feeling any pain! Never ignore tooth pain; it's your body's way of waving a red flag.

What Is a Dental Emergency?Woman holding jaw in pain | Dentist Fontana CA

Pain is usually a clear indicator that you are experiencing an emergency. Other common issues that require prompt treatment include:

  • Unexplained swelling
  • A "pimple" on your gum tissue
  • Extreme sensitivity
  • A chipped tooth
  • A broken tooth
  • A tooth that has been knocked loose or knocked out
  • A broken appliance or restoration
  • A foreign object caught between your teeth that you can't remove with brushing or floss

Don't sit at home and wonder if your problem is "severe" enough to be an emergency. If you ever have a question or concern, don't hesitate to call our dental office. We'll assess your symptoms and determine whether an office visit is necessary or if your issue needs only home treatment.

We need to address dental infections, abscesses, and broken or lost teeth quickly. A dental infection can be quite painful and may spread to other parts of the body. When a tooth is broken or lost, time is of the essence if we are to save the tooth. Please don't wait to call our dental practice.

Please note: If you have suffered an injury in a way that caused you to lose consciousness, you are bleeding profusely, or you suspect that you have broken a bone, please visit the emergency room or call 911.

How Do I Know If I Have a Dental Emergency?

Sometimes it's unclear if an event is an emergency or something that can wait for the next available dental appointment. If at any time you feel that something isn't right with your oral health, give us a call right away. Getting a professional opinion never hurt anyone, and we may be able to identify unrelated dental problems during our examination. At the end of the day, any tooth pain or dental abnormality should be looked at as soon as possible.

Same Day Emergency in Fontana CAThe most common form of dental emergency we see in our Fontana dental office start as small toothaches. Patients must get dental pain examined in case of tooth infection, decay, or an abscess. Infections in your oral cavity should be treated immediately since they can quickly become life-threatening. Dr. Mo Koperly, your emergency dentist in Fontana, can help identify the source of your pain and relieve it.

If your dental emergency is due to getting hit in the face during a sporting event, or from falling or other accident, we want to see you immediately to see if you have a broken or fractured tooth. We can fix your broken tooth in Fontana right away.

If your tooth has been knocked out, time is critical to save it. If you do have a removed tooth, you can try to put it back in the socket (gently!) and keep it in place with your tongue. If that seems too uncomfortable, try holding it in your mouth between your gum and cheek. It's essential to keep the tooth from drying out or getting dirty, and your mouth is a natural container for it!

Losing a dental crown or filling isn't necessarily an urgent issue, and you can choose to wait until the next available appointment if you prefer. We will make room for you if you are uncomfortable with waiting, we are here to help you.

If you want to give our friendly dental team a call, we can provide advice while assessing the situation.

After Hours Options

Unfortunately, dental emergencies don't necessarily stick to "office hours." Weekend sports injuries and broken teeth caused by biting down on an unexpected olive pit at dinner can undoubtedly lead to emergency dental visits! We've made it easy for our patients to access our dentists, no matter what time their emergency occurs.

A member of our team is on call 24/7, so all you have to do is call our regular office number and follow the directions on the recorded message to reach us right away. We'll give you the advice to help you stay comfortable until we can see you when the office is open.

What to Do During a Dental Emergency

We work hard to see you the same day of your dental emergency, but there are things you can do to keep the situation under control. Sometimes these actions can make the difference between saving or losing a tooth.

Tooth or Jaw Pain: Pain can debilitating; tooth pain can be exceptionally agonizing. Often this can indicate that you may have a broken, decayed, infected, or abscessed tooth. These situations often need immediate attention with Dr. Koperly. We may recommend a root canal to save your tooth. Try applying an ice pack gently for twenty-minute intervals.

Knocked-Out Tooth: We have a solid chance of saving your tooth if we see you within 30 minutes of losing your tooth. Keep the tooth in your mouth or in milk or water to keep it from drying out.

Chipped or Broken Tooth: Rinse your mouth with water and keep your mouth clean. An ice pack can help reduce swelling.

Lost Crown or Filling: While this type of dental emergency may not be painful, it should be looked at by Dr. Koperly since the tooth might be weakened and can potentially crack. We can avoid any damage by replacing it.

Frequently Asked Questions

There are several steps you can take to manage a dental emergency until you can get to our office for treatment. But the first thing you need to do when you experience anything out of the ordinary with your oral health is to call Winning Smiles at (909) 822-3003.

Here are some of the most common problems our emergency dentist in Fontana, CA treats, and how to handle them until we see you.

  • Toothache – Don't ever ignore tooth pain. Take OTC pain relievers, swish salt water around in your mouth, or try a cold compress to reduce pain and swelling until you get to our office.
  • Broken tooth – Collect the broken fragments and bring them with you to your dental appointment.
  • Lost dental crown or filling – Wrap the lost crown in tissue to keep it safe. If we see you promptly, there's a good chance we can cement it back onto your tooth. Our emergency dentist will need to replace any lost tooth fillings.
  • Knocked-out tooth – Hold the tooth by the crown only and do not touch the root. Try to gently place the tooth back in its socket; if this isn't possible, put it in the pocket between your cheek and gums, or in a container of milk or saliva, and bring it with you.

Since we offer same-day emergency care and we'll decide if you need to see our emergency dentist in Fontana, CA right away or if it's safe for you to wait until our next available appointment.

We are available to take your emergency call 24/7. Call our main office number at (909) 822-3003 to speak to a member of our team.

Stabbing your gums or the roof of your mouth while eating can send a wave of panic through your body. It’s painful and can make you wonder if you should call your dentist. But is it a true dental emergency, or can it wait?

The difference between a minor issue and a significant concern could make all the difference in protecting your oral health and peace of mind. When your mouth is at risk, knowing who to call is essential.

Should I Call My Dentist?

It certainly hurts when you stab your gums or the roof of your mouth, but this usually isn’t considered a dental emergency. However, our dental team will happily take your call if you’re unsure whether you need emergency treatment.

Treating a Minor Mouth Injury

There are some things you can do to alleviate any discomfort and help your mouth heal. Consider these tips:

  • Rinse your mouth with warm salt water several times to keep the area clean.
  • Apply pressure to the area with gauze to stop the bleeding.
  • Use an ice pack or cold compress on the outside of your cheek to reduce any swelling.

If you are bleeding excessively or experiencing severe pain that doesn’t go away with over-the-counter pain relievers, please contact our dental office immediately.
